About the Social Science Department
Welcome to the Social Science Department, formerly known as the General Arts Department where dedicated educationists with diverse cultural and intellectual backgrounds synergies to help nurture and shape young brains for future world of work and to address the dynamic emerging socio-economic challenges.
The mission of the department therefore is to apply modern methodologies and techniques in teaching and learning that seek to produce excellent academic performances and good moral training among learners.
It has the vision of producing well qualified students, who upon further education, will fit into various shades of careers and to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the country. The department models students by way of conscientising them to understand and appreciate their strengths and challenges aimed at helping them to harness and develop their capabilities to the fullest. Parents and guardians are hereby encouraged to enroll their wards into the Social Science Department of Tamale Girls Senior High School for their Senior Secondary education.
The Social Science Department plays very important and multifaceted roles in this institution of learning in particular and to the society in general. It supports students to understand theoretical and practical concepts in and outside the classroom through experiential and collaborative learning strategies. This helps to facilitate and develop the critical thinking abilities of learners in their academic activities and to help solve future national issues such as economic growth, good governance, unemployment, ecological imbalances, among others.
The Elective subject areas in the Department involve a combination of four (4) elective subjects for each enrolled student and they include:
- Economics, Government, Geography, Christian and Islamic Religious Studies, (4 Electives)
- History, French/Dagbani, Economics , and Literature-in-English (4 Electives).
- Government, Economics, Elective Mathematics Geography Information Communication and Technology (Elective) (4 Electives).
It is important to note that some of the elective combinations involve subjects that belong to other departments, hence the SOSD works in collaboration with the Mathematics Department, Languages Department and the ICT Department in honouring the various elective subjects above named.
The Department consists of qualified and committed teachers who execute their duties and responsibilities diligently. Currently, it has a staff strength of thirty (30); six females and twenty-four males and a student population of about seven hundred and sixty (760).
For purposes of facilitating our activities, teachers are usually grouped into various committees such as the Quiz and Debate Committee, Welfare Committee, Sports Committee and Educational Tour Committee. Students in the Department have a functional club known as Social Science Students Association (SOSSA) which is in charge of organizing students’ activities.
On this occasion of the 25th Anniversary commemoration of Tamale Girls Senior High School, I wish everyone a joyful and memorable celebration
