About the Guidance & Counselling Unit

The Ghana Education Service officially implemented the Guidance and Counselling Programme in all Pre-tertiary schools in Ghana on 4th November, 1976. The aims of the programme includes: to promote psychosocial development & mental health of learners by ensuring safe school environment & counselling; to provide academic and career guidance; to improve teaching and learning outcomes of learners for relevant skill acquisition as well as the development of right aptitudes and attitudes. G & C became fully operational in Tamale Girls’ SHS in September 2010. The eight major services offered are: Orientation, Counselling, Appraisal, Placement Consultation, Information, Referral and Follow-up. Counsellors operate under professional ethical principles including confidentiality, unconditional positive regard and non-judgementalism.
